What Exactly is A Meaningful Meal?

A meaningful meal is when my family communes at our table and connects authentically. When my young children see their parents engage in sincere conversation, formulating plans for our family, showing concern for the others well-being, is when I know we're doing mealtime right as parents.

  • As parents to little ones, we use our table to emphasize the values of empathy and compassion. I believe raising compassionate children who are conscientious of global happenings starts at home, around the table, by sharing concern and empathy with our own families.

A meaningful meal is when everyone can still down at the table without feeling rushed, let their guards down and have fun while enjoying a good meal and engaging conversation.

  • During dinner, we have a tradition called Roses & Thorns. Each person has to share a Rose (a good thing that happened during the day) and a Thorn (a bad thing). There is no limit to the things each person can share, but the Roses must outnumber the Thorns.

  • When our children were fidgety preschoolers, we started a tradition of lowering the lights in the dining room and lighting a candle during the meal. The candle quieted them in an almost hypnotic way. And at the end of the meal, they took turns blowing it out--a big treat for being cooperative during dinner.
